Despite its physical growth, the
city suffered greatly from, and
was isolated by, its partition. The
international community refused
to recognize Jerusalem as Is-
rael's capital in view of the unre-
solved controversy over the city's
political status. Tourism and
pilgrimage to the city, long the
major sources of income, were
badly hurt and occasional sniper
fire made life in the neighbor-
hoods along the border difficult.
